Emily Musson

2018-2019

Emily Frances Musson is a 2018 graduate of Brooklyn Law School. Originally from the Chicagoland area, Emily has been setting roots in New York City since 2009. She spent her first five years in the city working for a law firm while she finished her Bachelor’s degree at night, and before long, law school became the obvious next step. Combined with her passions for social justice and mental health and disability advocacy, a rewarding career began to take shape. Throughout law school, Emily’s devotion to public service blossomed as she has learned about the interplays of age, health, autonomy, and access to the necessities of life. Through internships and clinic experiences, she was exposed to these realities on a policy level as well as through providing direct services. She soon became aware of a pattern that her aging clients had fewer personal and family advocates, as well as more complex legal and social issues.

With the support of the Borchard Foundation Center on Law and Aging, Emily will spend her fellowship year working in Lenox Hill Neighborhood House’s Legal Advocacy Department as a Housing/Health Care Attorney operating under a holistic lawyering model. Specifically, Emily’s innovative role will focus on ensuring access to safe and stable housing, health care, government benefits, and advance directives for aging adults living in Manhattan, as their primary or perhaps only legal advocate. This model will help streamline services for the most vulnerable clients, and will also allow Emily to build the level of trust necessary for successful legal advocacy on behalf of clients who are homebound, have physical or mental disabilities, and/or are reluctant to engage with community agencies.
