Kristine Simpson

2016-2017

Kristine Simpson graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law in December 2015. She received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Furman University. Prior to attending law school, Kristine raised four boys and worked as an Intake Officer for DeSoto County Youth Court in Mississippi. During law school, she was an editor for both the Mississippi Law Journal and the Mississippi Sports Law Review and had two comments published. In her last semester, Kristine was involved in a legislation and policy clinic, assisting Mississippi’s WINGS committee with research and reform recommendations concerning the state’s guardianship and conservatorship policy and practices. It is through this work that Kristine discovered her passion for elder law.

As a 2016-2017 Borchard Fellow, Kristine will partner with North Mississippi Rural Legal Services’ (NMRLS) Elder Law Project to create an interdisciplinary network model approach for responding to instances of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. She will host information sessions with the various service providers to promote dialogue offering their different perspectives on how they respond to these situations and what strengths and weaknesses they have identified in their processes. Kristine’s goal is to create resource materials that outline the response steps to take, including alternative routes of assistance and where to seek help to correct weaknesses in the system. She also plans to present the materials at continuing education workshops and to collaborate with the law school and the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project in an attempt to expand pro bono representation of elderly clients. Finally, Kristine will represent clients through NMRLS’s Elder Law Project.
