Devon Green graduated from Wake Forest Law School in May, 2006, and was admitted to the State Bar of Vermont in December, 2006. Prior to law school, Ms. Green received her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College. While in her third year of law school, Ms. Green participated in Wake Forest's Elder Law Clinic under Prof. Kate Mewhinney, and became enamored with elder law after doing a financial exploitation case for an elderly disabled veteran. During law school, she was also involved with the Public Interest Law Organization, the Domestic Violence Clinic, Teen Court, and the Guardian Ad Litem Program. She published an article and served as an editor on the Wake Forest Law Review.
As a 2008-2009 Borchard Fellow, Ms. Green is working on developing a seniors-based consumer law practice with the Senior Citizens Law Project at Vermont Legal Aid. Ms. Green is representing seniors in consumer collection, consumer fraud, and financial exploitation cases. At the same time, she is working with the Consumer Assistance Program at the Vermont Attorney General's office to train seniors on consumer protection issues. Ms. Green is also tracking legislation involving long term care insurance partnerships, reverse mortgages, and stranger-originated life insurance. In the course of her legislative research, she has learned that Vermont's law is unclear regarding private enforcement of consumer protections against insurance companies and hopes to write an article on this issue.
In addition to her consumer work, Ms. Green has also become the chair of the Elder Law Section of the Vermont Bar Association. During her time there, she has organized trainings on guardianship and Medicaid planning. She hopes to make state Medicaid regulations and probate decisions more accessible to Vermont's elder law attorneys.
