Originally from Florida, Alejandro Rivera graduated from Boston University in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He then received his law degree and a degree certificate in Law and Public Policy from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 2026.
Alejandro began law school to advocate for underrepresented and vulnerable communities. During his first year in law school, Alejandro served as legal intern for Connecticut Legal Service’s Consumer Law Project for Elders where he spearheaded an initiative aimed at protecting LGBTQ+ older adults from discrimination in long-term care facilities. He also worked as a policy intern at Transgender Law Center where he maintained a comprehensive fifty-state legislation tracker that helped the team stay current on emerging laws and adjust the advocacy efforts accordingly.
Building on a newfound passion for law and aging, Alejandro spent the summer of 2025 at Justice in Aging as their Racial Justice Fellow. During the summer, Alejandro was a member of the Equity team working to improve the lives of low-income older adults who have been historically marginalized. Alejandro worked on numerous projects, including efforts to expand tribal elder access to home and community-based services, and bolster protections for older adults with disabilities. Alejandro currently works as legal intern in Connecticut Fair Housing Center’s Foreclosure Unit where he advocates for fair housing and protects housing stability.
As a 2026-2028 Borchard Fellow, Alejandro will be hosted by Maryland Legal Aid where he will lead a benefits justice initiative focused on mitigating harm and preserving service delivery in response to rule, policy, and benefit changes imposed by H.R. 1. By combining education, outreach, and direct representation, Alejandro will safeguard low-income older Marylanders’ access to essential benefits such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
