The Albert and Elaine Borchard Foundation Board of Directors are delighted to announce the 2026-2028 Borchard Fellows in Law & Aging. They are Alejandro Rivera and Lex Uttamsingh who will begin their fellowships in the fall of 2026. Congratulations!
Alejandro Rivera will be hosted by Maryland Legal Aid where he will lead a benefits justice initiative focused on mitigating harm and preserving service delivery in response to rule, policy, and benefit changes imposed by H.R. 1. By combining education, outreach, and direct representation, Alejandro will safeguard low-income older Marylanders’ access to essential benefits such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Lex Uttamsingh joins Access Justice Brooklyn’s team and work to ensure economic security for older New Yorkers. Her project will be dedicated to enrolling New Yorkers ages 62 and older in the state’s Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption program. She will also join Access Justice Brooklyn’s bankruptcy team and assist older adults in filing for bankruptcy.
Since the fellowship program began in 1999, the Center on Law & Aging has awarded fellowships with the goal of providing substantial support and guidance to early career lawyers dedicated to advocating for the legal rights of and improving the quality of life for older adults, including those who are poor or otherwise isolated by language, culture, lack of education, disability, or other barriers.
